Ranchers who came to the area did not appreciate the benefits of the many trees growing on the land. They started burning the trees which caused a destruction of the natural forests, so they could turn the land into grazing for livestock.
They destroyed the most important crop to the “Marahao People.”
The natives were then forced to “rent” trees from cattle ranchers if they wanted to take advantage of the babassu trees generous offers.
Nut breaker women, as they were called, fought back against the rich cattle Ranch Owners. After sending away their children and for men in the area to protect them, they Tappert formed a human chain and prevented the destruction of more of their preciousBabassu trees.
They organized and lobbied and eventually won the right to collect Babassu nuts and put their resources to survive. The Free Nut Act was passed thanks to these courageous and inspiring women, who can now continue to provide for their Families.
